You almost never meet riddance by itself. What people say is good riddance — a blunt, not-polite way to show you are glad someone has left, or that a thing is finally gone. The feeling is 'we are better off without that'. It can sound angry, relieved, or both. You might it when a rude guest walks out, or about a job you hated, or even an old sofa you finally threw away. It is informal. The older meaning was simply 'clearing away'; the set phrase is what kept the word alive. Said to someone's face, it is a snub.

組成rid + -ance. Rid means 'clear away / get free of'. An older English word hryding meant a clearing in the land. Today the noun mostly lives inside the phrase good riddance.
