Riches are expensive things you own and large amounts of money: houses, jewels, land, gold, a fortune. The word is always plural in this meaning — you speak of riches, not a rich. It sounds a little older and more story-like than money or wealth. You hear it in “rags to riches,” in talk of “the riches of the earth,” and in tales about kings and treasure. People also stretch it away from cash: “the riches of the library,” “the island’s natural riches,” meaning plenty of good things, not only coins. You would not usually say it of a month’s salary; it points at a lot, and often at what has been piled up. Though actually, English mixed two older words here — one home-grown word for power and wealth, and a French word richesse — so the -es looks like a plural even when the idea is a mass of wealth.
組成From Middle English riches, the plural of riche (“power, wealth”), from Old English rīċe (“power, authority”). English also mixed this with Middle English richesse, from Old French richesse (“wealth”), from riche (“rich”). The modern form looks like rich + -es.
