Ribald describes jokes, songs, or talk that are funny, rude, and about sex. It is not just “.” The laugh is part of it: the speaker is being coarse on purpose, and the room is supposed to enjoy the shock. You meet it most with remarks, humour, tales, and old writing — ribald jokes, a ribald song, ribald comments after dinner. It is a rather , grown-up word. Younger people more often say dirty joke, rude, or crude; ribald turns up in reviews, history, and literature more than in the playground. It can describe a person (“a ribald comedian”), but it is still mostly about the talk, not about a kind of person you would use in everyday chat. Though actually, it is ruder than playful teasing, and milder than words we would not print: the old idea is bawdy comedy, not simply being nasty.
