Rhodesia was the name Britain used for a large piece of land in southern Africa. Though actually there were two. Southern Rhodesia is the country we now call Zimbabwe. Northern Rhodesia is the country we now call . Later, when people said Rhodesia with no 'Southern' or 'Northern', they usually meant the south — Zimbabwe — especially in the years when a white government there tried to keep power. Nobody in everyday life calls the country Rhodesia now. You will meet the word in history class, in old books and maps, and in stories about that time. It is a proper name, so it starts with a capital letter.
組成Rhodes + -ia (a place-name ending). Named after Cecil Rhodes, who ran the British South Africa Company.
