To rewire something is to put new electric wires in it — a house, a machine, a lamp — usually because the old wires are worn, unsafe, or not enough. An rewires a kitchen; a shop may rewire an old light. It is a practical, slightly technical word. Though actually, people stretch it a lot now: to rewire your brain, or rewire a company, means to change how the parts are connected and how the whole thing works, as if you were changing the wires. That picture still comes from the electric sense; it is not a different word.
