Revivalism is an organized push to make a religion popular again — especially Protestant Christianity. Preachers hold big meetings, people sing, and listeners are asked to come back to faith with strong feeling. In American history this is the story of “revival” waves; the -ism names the movement, the style, and the belief that you can wake a whole town up this way. It is not a quiet private prayer. It is public, planned, and often loud. Though actually writers also stretch the word to bringing back an old art or building style; the heart of this entry is still that religious campaign. Keep it apart from revival (one wave, or the event) and from revivalist (the person).
