Reverend is a title we put in front of a Christian church leader’s name. We write “the Reverend Chen” the way we write “Doctor Chen.” It names the person who leads a church — a pastor or a priest — and it is a polite, formal way to speak of them. You see it on church signs, wedding papers, and in the news. People do not usually say “I met a reverend” the way they say “I met a doctor.” They say “I met a pastor” or “I met a priest,” and they keep Reverend for the title in front of a name. Though actually, in some places, especially in American English, you will hear “a reverend” anyway. There is also an old, bookish use: a “reverend” person or thing is one you should respect very much. That use is rare now. When it is a title before a name, we give it a capital R.
