Retrogression is the fact, or the process, of falling back to an earlier and worse situation. You meet it in serious writing: a retrogression in rights, a retrogression in public health, a body part that became simpler over a very long time. It names the slide, not a single moment. Though actually, in daily English people still prefer a step backwards, a decline, or getting worse. Keep this word for essays, news analysis, history, and science, where a calm noun is needed for a sad direction of travel. It is heavier than regression in tone, but they sit in the same neighbourhood of meaning.
