    To regress is to go back to an earlier state that is worse, or to a less grown-up way of behaving. A country can regress if rights or living standards fall. An illness can regress if a patient slips back. A child who was sleeping through the night might regress after a shock and need a night light again. Psychologists use it more tightly: under stress, a person may drop back into an older emotional pattern. The everyday opposite people learn is progress — go forward. Though actually, in a class you will also meet regression, a maths tool for finding patterns in numbers. That path of the family does not mean “getting worse.” In ordinary talk, regress almost always means a slide backwards.

組成From Latin regressus, from re- (“back”) + gradior (“to go, to step”). Literally “to step back.”
