    A retroflex speech sound is made with the tip of your tongue curled back and a little up, toward the roof of the mouth. It is a teachers’ and linguists’ word, from the study of speech sounds. You write it in sound charts; you do not use it in the street. The same word can also name the sound itself: “a retroflex.” In Chinese class, zh, ch, sh and r are often called 捲舌音, and English books sometimes label those as retroflex. Though actually, specialists argue about that: some say the Mandarin sounds are not “true” retroflex in the strictest sense, because the tongue is not curled as far back as in some other languages. And in Taiwan, many people say these sounds with less curl than in Beijing, so the English word may feel stronger than what you do in everyday 國語. For a student, the useful picture is still the same: the tongue tip points back, not forward against the teeth.
