The past tense of "retract" — to take back something you said, wrote, or promised, usually because it turned out to be wrong or you no longer stand behind it, like retracting a false statement. It also has a physical meaning, describing something pulled back inside, like a cat retracting its claws, or an airplane retracting its wheels after takeoff.
