Retailing is the business of selling goods to ordinary customers in shops — and now also in online shops — rather than selling huge amounts to other businesses. The person who walks in to buy a shirt, a phone, or a bag of rice is a retail customer; the shop is doing retailing. The other side is wholesale: selling in bulk to shops, not to the person who will use the thing. You study retailing at business school; job ads and newspapers talk about the retailing industry. The word is simply the -ing name of that trade. It is a business word, not a kitchen word; at home you just say selling in shops. Though actually, an older use of retail as a verb was “to tell a story in bits,” like handing out news in small pieces, but that is not the meaning you will meet in class or in a shop.
組成retail + -ing. Retail itself comes from Old French retailler, “to cut again” — selling goods in small amounts, not the whole piece.
