1. 1

Respectfulness is the quality of treating people, places, or ideas with care and honour. If you have it, you listen, you do not talk over someone, and you do not laugh at what matters to them. It is the noun from respectful — the habit itself, not one polite moment. In everyday talk people usually just say respect: “show some respect.” Though actually, respectfulness points a little more to the way you usually are, a settled manner, while a single kind act might only be called respect. You can speak of respectfulness toward elders, toward a religion, or toward a rule. Speakers almost always mean it as a good thing. It belongs to careful or school-like English more than to a chat with friends.
