1. 1

Residuary is a lawyers’ word. When a person dies, named gifts and bills are paid first. What remains — the residuary estate — is the rest of the money and property. A residuary gift, or a residuary , is about that leftover pile: the person or charity who gets whatever is left after everything else has been settled. You will almost never need this outside wills and inheritance. Though actually, it is not a fancy for residual in science class; keep it in the will. Everyday English just says “what is left of the estate.”
