Residual means what is left after a process or event is finished, or after the main part has been taken away. After you wash a pan, a residual smell of garlic might stay; after a storm, residual water sits in the road. Doctors and scientists use it a lot: residual risk, residual heat, residual disease. As a noun, a residual is that leftover itself. It is a school-and-office word; everyday English often just says leftover or remaining. Though actually, people stretch it to feelings too — residual anger after a fight, meaning the anger that did not quite go. In money talk, residual income is money that keeps coming after the work is already done.
