If you look or speak reprovingly, you show criticism in the way you do it — the look, the shake of the head, the voice. It is the adverb of reproving. Same formal, slightly old flavour. You put it with a verb of showing: look, say, shake one’s head, click one’s tongue. Students will meet it in stories more than in the street.
