1. 1

A reproachful look, remark, or silence shows that you are blaming someone — not with a shout, but with the face or the words of a person who is hurt or disappointed. Parents are good at this: they do not have to say much; the look is enough. It is softer and sadder than angry, and more personal than a formal reprimand. It says: I expected better of you. You put it on looks, voices, tones, and comments much more than on people. “A reproachful glance” is the natural home of the word; “a reproachful man” sounds a little odd, though you will sometimes meet it. If you have let someone down, and they want you to feel it without a fight, their manner may be reproachful.
