To repossess something is to take it back when a person was paying for it little by little — a car, furniture, a house — and then cannot keep paying. The company or the bank repossesses it. It is a hard, official word, used in law, money, and news. The people who take the car are sometimes called repo men in casual American talk; the verb on the form is still repossess. Though actually, it is not a general word for “own again.” If you lost your keys and found them, you did not repossess them. And it is not stealing: the lender had a right in the agreement to take the thing back if the payments stopped. You will hear it most about cars and homes, less about small everyday things.
