Reportedly means “according to what some people say.” You have heard it, or it is in the news, but you are not putting your own name on it as a sure fact. “She is reportedly leaving the company.” News uses this word all the time, because the paper must tell you the claim and still leave a little room: we did not see it with our own eyes. It is a careful, slightly formal adverb. Though actually, people also use it in speech when they want to pass on a story without fighting about whether it is true. It does not tell you how someone spoke, and it does not mean “she reported it.” It means the story is going around. If you are sure, say the fact straight; if you are only passing it on, reportedly is the honest word.
