A repeater is a gun you can fire more than once before you have to put new shots in. Older guns made you stop after every single shot: you loaded, you , and then you had to load all over again. A repeater keeps extra shots ready inside it, so you can fire, then fire again, then fire again, until those shots are gone. Only then do you load. People used the word a lot in the 1800s, when this kind of gun still felt new. A — the gun with a round part that turns — is one kind of repeater, because it holds several shots at once. Though actually, in a gun shop today you are more likely to hear repeating rifle than repeater; the shorter word now feels a little old, or a little technical, and it shows up most in history and in talk about old guns. It is not a rude word. It is just not the first word most people reach for when they mean a gun.
組成From repeat + -er. Repeat is to do again; -er here is the thing that does it. So a repeater is a thing that repeats the shot.
