1. 1

Rented describes a house, flat, car, or other thing that you pay rent to use — you do not own it. Rented accommodation is housing people pay for month by month. Though actually, English is a little messy here. A rented house usually means the people inside are paying to live there. A house for rent is the owner’s sign: they want someone to pay. Rental is a close cousin (a rental car). The same spelling is also the past of the verb rent (we rented a van). An old verb rent meaning “to tear” exists, but in today’s ordinary English rented almost never means torn; we say torn instead.
