A rematch is a second contest between the same two people or teams, especially when the first one did not settle things — a draw, a fight about the result, or a hunger to try again. Boxing, tennis, and football news love it. It is also a verb: they will rematch in June, though the noun is more common. Game players say it too: one more round, same opponents. Though actually, it is not just the next game on the list. A rematch is specifically those same sides again. The next round of a big competition, with new pairings, is a different thing. The word is sports talk, quite at home in headlines, and not fancy.

組成re- (again) + match (a contest). The re- piece comes down from Latin through French and Middle English. Same build for the noun and the verb.
