A reliquary is a special box, case, or container made to hold a relic — a small holy object tied to a saint or holy person, such as a bone, a piece of cloth, or something they touched. Churches keep reliquaries; some are plain, some are gold and glass and meant to be seen. This is a church-and-museum word, not a kitchen word. Though actually, museums also talk about the reliquary as art: people come to see the container itself, not only what is inside. The idea is “a home for something left behind that people treat as holy.”
