If you are reliant on someone or something, you need them in order to manage. You are not standing fully on your own.
If you are reliant on someone or something如果你 reliant on(依賴)某人或某件事 you need them in order to manage就代表你需要靠他們才能應付得來。You are not standing fully on your own你不是完全靠自己站起來的。
We almost always say reliant on, not reliant to or reliant with. A sick person may be reliant on a nurse; a village may be reliant on one well.
We almost always say reliant on我們幾乎都說 reliant on,not reliant to or reliant with不會說 reliant to 或 reliant with。A sick person may be reliant on a nurse生病的人可能會 reliant on(依賴)護士;a village may be reliant on one well一個村莊可能會依賴一口井。
It names a state, and people often use it with a little worry: we have become too reliant on our phones. It is a bit more formal than we need or we depend on.
It names a state這個字講的是一種狀態,and people often use it with a little worry而且人們常常帶著一點擔心用它:we have become too reliant on our phones我們變得太依賴手機了。It is a bit more formal than "we need"這個字比 we need or "we depend on"或 we depend on 都要正式一點。
Though actually, reliant and reliable look like close cousins — and they are, both growing from rely — but they point different ways. Reliable is the one others can trust. Reliant is the one who needs something else. Mixing those two is the easy trap.
Though actually不過其實,reliant and reliable look like close cousinsreliant 和 reliable 看起來像近親 — and they are而且的確是,both growing from rely都是從 rely 長出來的 — but they point different ways但方向不一樣。Reliable is the one others can trust別人可以信任的是 reliable。Reliant is the one who needs something else需要依靠別的東西的是 reliant。Mixing those two is the easy trap把這兩個字搞混是很容易犯的錯。
