Refining is the process of making something purer or better by taking away the parts you don't want. With oil, sugar, or metal, refining means removing the rough, unwanted material until only the clean, useful part is left — this is why we talk about an 'oil refinery'. The same idea works for skills and ideas too: refining a plan, a recipe, or your English pronunciation means making small changes again and again until it is smoother and more exact, not adding something completely new.
