    A reductionist is someone who explains a thing as ‘really just’ its simple parts. The same word is an adjective: a reductionist view, a reductionist argument. Like , it often carries a little — the speaker thinks the person has made the thing too small and too thin. You will meet it in university essays and reviews, not in everyday chat. In science it can be fairly neutral (‘a reductionist account of chemistry’); in the humanities it often means ‘too simple, and proud of it’. is the belief; a reductionist is the person, or the kind of explanation.
