Reductionism is a way of explaining the world — and a word people often use with a . A reductionist explanation says a big, rich thing is ‘really just’ its small parts: a person is really just chemicals; a society is really just individuals; a poem is really just grammar. Science often works by taking things apart, and that can be useful. People call it reductionism, with , when they think you have thrown away what made the thing itself — the feeling, the whole, the meaning. It is an academic and critical-essay word, not something you say at dinner. Using the word often already shows you do not like the explanation.
