Someone redoubtable is a person you respect — and, though actually, a little fear as well. It is not the same as respectable, which is about being proper and well thought of. A redoubtable opponent, teacher, or champion is formidable: you take them seriously because they are strong, sharp, or hard to beat. The word is formal and a bit old-fashioned, the kind of thing you meet in newspapers, biographies, and careful speech, not in the playground. People almost always use it of a person (sometimes of a reputation or a team that feels like a person). It is usually a compliment with an edge: admiration mixed with caution.
