To redouble your effort — or your attempts — is to try much harder than before, usually because the job got more difficult or because you nearly failed. Teachers, coaches, and news reports like this word: a search party redoubles its efforts; a team redoubles its training. It sounds a little formal and a little dramatic. You would not often say it about making tea. Though actually, it does not have to mean “exactly twice as much.” People use it loosely for “a lot more.” In the card game bridge there is a special move also called redouble, after someone has doubled a bid; that is a game term, not the everyday one. The sense you need first is “try much harder.”
