To rectify something is to make it right after it was wrong. You rectify an error in the accounts, a false impression, a bad decision. The word is formal. Teachers and officials like it; friends usually say fix, correct, or put right. “I will rectify that” in a meeting sounds responsible; the same sentence about a word in a text message sounds too big. There is a second, specialist use: in electrical work, to rectify current is to change it from the kind that keeps switching direction (AC) into the kind that flows one way (DC). Same spelling, different room. The everyday meaning is the first one: correct what is wrong.
