A rectangle is a flat shape with four straight sides and four square corners (90°). Two sides are often longer than the other two, so it looks like a door or a book. Though actually, a square is a rectangle too: it has those same four right corners; its sides just happen to be equal. Maths teachers will say that. Everyday English is messier — many people say “rectangle” only for the long one and keep “square” separate, as if they were different families. Both ways of talking are common; the tidy school answer is the first one. You also hear it for real objects: a rectangular table, a rectangular window. The adjective is rectangular.
