A record-breaker is a person — or sometimes a thing — that does better than anyone or anything has done before in that kind of thing. A runner who goes faster than the old world mark is a record-breaker. A film that sells more tickets than any film before can be called a record-breaker too. Newspapers like the word; it has a proud, headline feeling. Though actually, someone else may beat that mark next year, so record-breaker is about the moment of going past the old best, not about keeping the crown for ever. The person who has the best mark right now is the record-holder. The describing word for a number, a season, or a heat wave is record-breaking.
組成record (the best mark so far) + breaker (the one who breaks it — here break means “go past,” not smash).
