If you are reckless, you do not care — or you will not let yourself care — about the possible bad or dangerous results of what you are doing. This is stronger and darker than careless. Careless often means you were not paying attention. Reckless often means the danger was there to see, and you went ahead anyway: driving far too fast, climbing on a roof for fun, spending money you cannot pay back, saying something cruel without a thought for the hurt. People use it of actions (a reckless decision) and of people (a reckless driver). It is never praise. News reports and courts use it as a serious word. Though actually, friends sometimes use it more loosely, almost meaning “wild” or “very bold,” which is a bit softer than the strict sense.
組成reck (an old verb meaning “to care” or “to pay heed,” now rare on its own) + -less (“without”). From Middle English rekles, from Old English rēcelēas: without care.
