A recapitulation is the going-over of the main points — the summary itself, or the act of making it. After a long talk, the recapitulation is the short return to “here is what we said.” It is more formal than recap. In music, especially in sonata form, the recapitulation is the part where the first tunes come back, often in the home key — that is still “going over the main parts again,” just inside a piece of music. In older science writing you may also meet it for the idea that growth repeats the history of a species; that use is specialist and much argued over. For , the home meaning is the summary.

組成From Late Latin recapitulatio (“summing up”), from recapitulare (to recapitulate), from re- + capitulum (chapter, section), the small form of caput (head). English took it through Anglo-Norman and Middle French.
