A real-time computer system deals with information as fast as the information arrives. It does not pile the data up to look at “later.” Think of a live video call, a plane’s flight computer, or a price screen that moves while you watch: the machine is keeping up with the world as the world happens. As an adjective it is usually (real-time data, a real-time system). The noun phrase is often written open: “in real time” — “We watched the results in real time.” Though actually, ads and apps have stretched the word. “Real-time updates” on a phone may still be a few seconds late; everyday talk has drifted toward “pretty much live,” not the strict engineering sense of “the system will always answer before a set deadline, or something unsafe happens.”
real-time 指的是電腦系統會跟著資料進來的速度即時處理，不會先堆著等以後再看。像視訊通話、飛機上的飛控電腦，或跟著行情跳動的價格畫面，都是機器跟著現實同步。當形容詞時通常加連字號，形式是「real-time ＋名詞」，例如 real-time data、real-time system。名詞片語則常寫成兩個字 in real time，例句「We watched the results in real time」就是我們即時看著結果。廣告和 app 也常把這個字用得比較寬鬆，手機上的即時更新可能還差幾秒。日常說話的感覺比較接近差不多是現場，而工程上嚴格的意思是系統一定會在期限前回應，否則可能出現危險。
