Real-life is an adjective for things that happen, or happened, to actual people in the actual world — not in a book, a film, a game, or a made-up classroom example. A real-life hero, a real-life problem, a film based on a real-life couple.

Teachers use it a lot: “This is a real-life situation.” Though actually, people stretch it. A “real-life” magazine story may still be tidied up; and “Get a real life,” said sharply, is a different, looser use of the same two words, telling someone to stop wasting time on something the speaker thinks is not serious.
