A re-enactment is the performance itself: people acting out a past story, battle, or crime so that others can watch. Museums put on battle re-enactments; true-crime shows use a re-enactment when there is no film of the night. It is countable: one re-enactment, several re-enactments. In Britain and the US, historical re-enactment is also a hobby — people old clothes and spend a weekend pretending to live in another century. Though actually, a crime re-enactment on the news is not a hobby; it is a tool, and it can be rough to watch. The word names the show or the reconstruction, not the original event. The original already happened; the re-enactment is the copy. British spelling often keeps the (re-enactment); American spelling often reenactment.
