When someone asks for the rationale, they want the reasons behind a decision or a belief — not only what you chose, but why. A hospital might publish the rationale for a new visiting rule; a student might ask for the rationale behind a grade. The word sits on the formal side. At home, people usually just say "why." You will meet it in essays, meetings, and news. Though actually, the rationale people write down is sometimes cleaner than the real mix of fear, habit, and last-minute change that produced the choice. It is a noun. The cousin word rational is an adjective: a rational plan is a plan that uses reason.
