A Rastafarian is someone who follows Rastafari, a religion that grew in Jamaica, especially from the 1930s. The name comes from Ras Tafari, a title of Haile Selassie I, who was emperor of Ethiopia. Many Rastafarians see him as God come to earth, or as the special saviour they had been waiting for — so calling him only “a religious leader” is a bit too small. A deep hope in the faith is that Black people, after slavery and years far from home, will return to Africa, often to Ethiopia, which they call Zion. You may notice dreadlocks (hair left to grow in long coils), reggae music, food kept as natural as possible, and a flag of red, gold and green. Some use cannabis in worship; some do not. Though actually, Rastafari is not one tight church: different groups teach in slightly different ways, and many Rastafarians never move to Africa even while Africa stays holy in their teaching. Also, not every person with dreadlocks is a Rastafarian.
