A rancher is someone who owns a ranch, or whose work is on a ranch. A ranch is a large farm, especially in the United States, Canada, or parts of South America, where cattle, horses, or sheep live on a wide stretch of land. Rancher is an American kind of word; in Britain people more often say farmer, unless they are talking about that North American world. A rancher is not the same as a cowboy. A cowboy may work with the animals; rancher points to the ranch itself — often the owner, or the person running it.
