Ramblings are speech or writing that goes on for a long time without a clear path. The speaker or writer jumps, repeats, wanders, and never quite arrives at a point. We almost always use it in the plural: his ramblings, late-night ramblings, the ramblings of an old diary. It is informal. It can be fond (“I love your ramblings about old films”) or impatient (“I couldn’t follow her ramblings”). It is not usually a hard insult like “lies”; it is more “this did not hold together.” Though actually a ramble, without the -s in that other use, can mean a walk in the country. Ramblings, in this sense, are wanderings of words, not of feet. A teacher might smile and say, “Let’s leave the ramblings and come back to the question.”
