    Raï (often written rai in English) is a style of popular music from Algeria, especially the city of Oran. It mixes older Algerian and Arabic song with pop, disco, and later electronic sounds. Singers often talk about everyday life — love, money, wanting more freedom — in a direct way that used to upset older listeners. Think of it as a music-style word, like or , not as a person’s name. Outside Algeria, Cheb Khaled is the singer many people have heard of. In English you may see the two dots on the i (raï); people still say it like ‘rye.’
