Ragwort is a common wild plant with bright yellow flowers, rather like small daisies in a bunch, and leaves whose edges look uneven, as if they were torn — that ragged look gave it the first part of the name. You see it in fields and by roads, especially in Britain and Ireland. Farmers worry about it because it can make horses and cows very ill if they eat enough of it. Wort is an old piece of English meaning ‘plant,’ so the name is really ‘ragged plant.’ It is not ragweed, the North American hay-fever plant, even though the two names sit next to each other in the dictionary.
