A raft is a flat, simple boat made by tying pieces of wood, or other floating material, together. People use rafts to cross rivers, escape from a sinking ship, or just float around and have fun on a lake. There is also a very different, everyday use: "a raft of" something means "a large number of" it — you might read that a company announced "a raft of new rules." This second use is common in news writing, less common in spoken conversation.
