This word has two uses. The medical one is literal: an animal that is "rabid" has rabies, a dangerous disease that affects the brain and can spread to humans through a bite — a rabid dog acts wild and dangerous. The second, more common use in everyday talk is figurative: "rabid" describes someone who supports something with extreme, almost out-of-control enthusiasm — "a rabid fan," "rabid supporters." It's stronger than just "very "; it suggests the person has lost a bit of reason.
