The rabbinate is rabbis talked about as a group — the body of rabbis in a town, a country, or a whole tradition. Newspapers say “the city’s rabbinate” the way they say “the church” to mean the leaders, not one person in a room. The same word can also mean the job or office of being a rabbi: “he entered the rabbinate” means he became a rabbi. It is a formal, slightly word. Ordinary people more often just say “the rabbis.”
