A rabbi is a Jewish teacher and community leader — the person trained in Jewish law who helps people live by it. books sometimes say “Jewish priest,” and that is close enough to start, but it is tidier than real life. In Jewish life a priest (a kohen) is a different, older family role; a rabbi is someone who has studied the books and is chosen to teach, to lead a , to marry people, and to answer hard questions. You address one as Rabbi plus the family name. The word is respectful. It is not the same job as a Christian priest, and it has nothing to do with the animal rabbit, though the two sound a little alike.
組成From Hebrew רַבִּי (rabbi), “my master”: רַב (rav) “master” + ־ִי (-í) “my.” English took it through Greek and Latin, then Middle English raby. Late Old English already had rabbi too.
