1. 1

The quickstep is a ballroom dance with light, fast footwork, and also the music written for it. Couples skim across the floor in 4/4 time: walks, chassés, locks, and little hops, all brighter and quicker than a slow foxtrot. It belongs with the standard ballroom dances people learn for competitions and for a wedding floor that suddenly fills. You can say “dance the quickstep” or “play a quickstep.” The name is as plain as it looks — quick steps — though actually it is a named dance, not just any walking. A soldier’s “quick step” as a marching pace is a cousin in ordinary English, but the dictionary sense you are learning here is the dance and its tune. It feels cheerful, not stiff; still, in a dance class it is a proper term with steps you can get wrong.
