Quicklime is a white powder — sometimes — made by heating limestone very hot in a until it changes. Chemists call it calcium oxide. Builders have used it for a long time to make mortar and plaster; it also turns up in steel-making and in treating water. Mix it with water and it grows hot and becomes slaked lime, which is a different, milder stuff. That heat is why the “quick” is there: in the old sense it means “alive, still active,” not “fast.” Quicklime is the lime while it still wants to react. It can burn skin and eyes, so it is not a kitchen powder and not a toy. Though actually, it has nothing to do with the green fruit called lime; that is only the same spelling. If you ever see it in an old story about graves, that is this white powder too — people once used it because it breaks things down.
