In this sense, quickening is not about speed at all. It is the moment — and those first small movements — when a pregnant person feels the baby move inside, often as a flutter, a roll, or a tiny kick. For many people this comes around the middle of the pregnancy, though it varies. Midwives and older writing still use the word; everyday talk now more often just says “I felt the baby move.” Though actually, the “quick” here is an old meaning, “alive,” the same one you hear in “the quick and the dead.” In the past this moment mattered in law and in the church, because people treated it as the point when the baby was clearly living. That older weight still sits inside the word, even when a doctor is only asking whether you have felt movement yet. You may also meet quicken as a verb for “become faster,” but that is a different road; this entry is the baby.
組成From old quick meaning “alive” (not “fast”) + -ening (the process of becoming). The baby is felt to be “quick” — living — from inside.
